This song was inspired by Mrs. Effie Ruff, who one day said to me, “You know you’re old,
when there’s no one left who remembers you when you were young.”
Profoundly struck by this truth, I made a note to one day write about it. As I thought about
how truly lonely it would be to outlive everyone who’d known you when you were young,
I thought, too, of the old ones of this world who outlive their beloved pets and wove the
memory of my own sweet Gracie to be her little dog of Verse II.
